The Institute adheres to the National Space Day by involving visitors with seminars, exhibits, round tables, games, workshops and video screenings

Doors open on Saturday 16th December: for the third National Space Day (GNS),National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) opens its doors to the public for observe the Earth from above.
National Day was established in 2021 to remember the launch of the first Italian satellite, San marco 1, which allowed our country to enter (after the United States and the Soviet Union) the limited list of countries capable of exceeding the Earth's atmosphere.
The activities organized by INGV will be an opportunity to let visitors discover how space observations of our planet are fundamental to gain ever greater knowledge of natural phenomena such as climate change, deformations of the earth's crust, volcanic eruptions and space weather, with the aim of improving scientific knowledge and contributing to public safety, environmental protection and the management of natural resources.
Observing and studying the Earth from above, in fact, allows us not only to appreciate its great beauty, but also to protect the planet for generations to come. INGV has been working for years to make the most of this privileged 'point of view', deepening the knowledge of our Home and its secrets.
Below are INGV's appointments with the public.

INGV Headquarters in Rome | Via di Vigna Murata, 605
Saturday 16 December 2023 | 10:00-18:00 - Open day
Informative seminars | Researchers will illustrate to the public the Institute's activities related to the theme 'space'. The seminars will also be streamed on YouTube channel “INGV Eventi”
Exhibit | Installations will tell about planet Earth and the activities of the Institute's Earth Space Observations Center (COS-INGV)
Projection room | Thematic videos will be broadcast continuously throughout the day
Interactive games | Dedicated to younger visitors, they will be divided into age groups
Show "Upside Down" | The artist Maria Sofia Palmieri will accompany the public on a journey in which art and science come together dance together

INGV headquarters in Bologna | at Cinema Lumière - Via Azzo Gardino, 10
Saturday 16 December 2023 | 10am
Panel discussion “Earth looks at Space - Space looks at Earth: from terrestrial movements to the crowding of Space” | Researchers from INGV and INAF (National Institute of Astrophysics) will involve the public to talk about two topics of great importance and scientific relevance: the fireball and their observation with optical and seismological methods connected with the consequent "hunt" for meteorites and artificial satellites, fundamental tools for observing the Earth and monitoring its deformations which, however, must in turn be monitored to protect them from space waste and, more generally, from the crowding of the orbits

INGV headquarters in Catania - Etna Observatory | Piazza Roma, 2
Saturday 16 December 2023 | 9:00-16:00 - Open day
Informative seminars | Researchers will tell the public about the Institute's activities related to the theme 'space'
Exhibit | Installations will show how spatial monitoring of volcanoes and other natural phenomena works, giving the opportunity to observe in action some remote sensing instruments on the ground that allow satellite data to be calibrated and validated
Projection room | Thematic videos will be broadcast continuously throughout the day
Visits to the Operations Room | Visitors will be able to take part in guided tours in the 'beating heart' of the Observatory
Educational and creative workshops | Children and teenagers will be able to participate in activities dedicated to them to better understand the natural phenomena that animate our planet
