The training project dedicated to young volcanologists starts

The IMPROVE project, part of the European Horizon 2020 programme, organizes again this year the IMPROVE Network School on Etna, a unique training event for young researchers who wish to deepen their knowledge in the field of volcanology.

The IMPROVE Network School on Etna will take place between 23 July and 2 August in the suggestive setting of Nicolosi and will bring together a selected group of 30 students from all over the world, including 15 IMPROVE students and 15 external students of international origin. Thanks to a combination of theoretical lessons, practical exercises and simulations of volcanic crisis, participants will have the unique opportunity to work closely with internationally renowned experts and acquire high-level expertise in multi-parameter monitoring of volcanoes and modeling of volcanic processes.

During school, students will have access to cutting-edge tools and technologies used in volcano monitoring, working as a true volcanological observatory. Furthermore, they will be involved in practical exercises which include the interpretation of data and observations collected during a volcanic crisis simulation, giving them the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during the course.

Parallel to the school, the researchers will conduct a multi-parameter experiment on the Etna volcano, in order to collect and analyze unique data on internal magmatic dynamics. This experiment will focus on the investigation of volcanic structure oscillations in a still little explored frequency band, providing valuable information on deep magmatic processes and helping to improve our ability to anticipate future volcanic eruptions.

Paolo Papale, INGV volcanologist and coordinator of the IMPROVE project he claims: "We are thrilled to offer this extraordinary opportunity to young researchers from all over the world. The IMPROVE Summer School at Etna is designed to offer high quality training and to create an international network of young experts in the field of volcanology. We are sure that this experience will help stimulate new scientific discoveries and promote innovation in the field of volcanoes".
