Back to 'Experience in Sign', the scientific event organized by the PALERMOSCIENZA Association which, from Tuesday 14 to Sunday 19 February From 09:00 13: 00, at the multi-educational complex of the University of Palermo (Building 19 - Viale delle Scienze), will involve the Scientific Police, the National Research Council (CNR), the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF), the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and other Institutions and schools of all levels present in the area.

Taking a cue fromAgenda 2030, this year's theme is inspired by the works of Italo Calvino and puts the accent on role of literature in scientific communication as part of the celebrations of centenary of the writer's birth.

The Palermo section of INGV in collaboration with the Etna Observatory (INGV-OE) will participate with the stand entitled: Lava from a volcano traces the god of the Underworld, inspired by “L'altra Euridice”, one of the stories that make up the Cosmicomics by Italo Calvino.

The public will be able to observe:

- The simulation of the ascent of magma through the volcanic conduit using a 3D volcano model. This model shows, in a simplified but effective way, the internal structure of a volcano by simulating the degassing of a magmatic body, the ascent of gases through the conduit and their emission above the crater.

- The sampling simulation of a fumarole. Visitors are invited to observe how volcanic gas sampling is carried out, an activity which in the context of geochemical monitoring is of extreme interest in assessing the state of activity of the volcanic system. The diorama reproduces a small-scale fumarole with gas sampling instruments.

- The 'Fragile Home', an educational tool to visualize a house “before” and “after” an earthquake. The 'Fragile Home' model is a visual dissemination tool for children aged 6 to 12. With it we want to achieve a dual purpose: to show live what can happen to homes "after" a seismic event and, therefore, to place at the center of their attention as future citizens the awareness that the construction of safe and resilient buildings earthquakes (and natural events in general) is essential to avoid damage and victims.

- An S13 seismometer, with which it will be possible to simulate an earthquake and visualize its seismic trace.

- An infrasonic sensor, with which it will be possible to include the detection of acoustic waves in infrasound frequencies.

- A seismometer which detects the movement of the ground when an earthquake occurs e an accelerometer which measures the acceleration to which the ground is subjected when an earthquake occurs.

- A thermal camera, with which it will be possible to understand the heat radiation emitted by bodies and how it is an important tool in the video surveillance of active volcanoes.

- The software with which it is possible to locate an earthquake, that is to determine the position in which it originates and its magnitude.

- The applications for the remote control of the functionality of the permanent seismic network.

Some rocks - volcanic and non-volcanic - from Sicily will then be presented and, through a model, the INGV researchers will describe to visitors the functioning of various types of faults. Visiting school teachers will be distributed books and brochures produced by the INGV Educational and Scientific Dissemination Laboratory and by EDURISK to support the training project and dissemination of knowledge on seismic and volcanic risk.
