Yesterday, November 15, the Minister of University and Scientific Research visited the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) welcomed in its Rome headquarters the Minister of University and Research (MUR) Sen. Prof. Anna Maria Bernini who was visiting the institution for the first time.

Received by the President of INGV, Prof. Carlo Doglioni, and by the Director General, Dr. Jair Lorenco, she visited the Monitoring Room in Rome and, in connection with the Surveillance Rooms of the Vesuvius Observatory of Naples and the Etna Observatory of Catania, followed directly the continuous activities that the Institute carries out for seismic, volcanic and tsunami warning monitoring and surveillance throughout the national territory and part of the Mediterranean.

Appreciation and gratitude were expressed by the Minister for the activities of the Institute which, the main Italian research body for the study of geosciences, with its commitment represents an excellence of the scientific world at an international level.

"It was a real pleasure to receive the Minister's visit”, declared the President of INGV Carlo Doglioni. “She has beengiven a chance to illustrate the extraordinary work of the INGV scientific community, and the importance of studying the Earth through monitoring and surveillance systems, particularly in an Italy highly exposed to natural hazards. The Institute, divided into three scientific departments, Environment, Earthquakes and Volcanoes, is present throughout Italy with ten Sections to which are added another twenty branches. INGV is a sentinel attentive to the breath of the Earth and its extreme natural events: we still have to understand a lot about the dynamics of earthquakes and eruptions to discover the mechanisms that regulate them in order to be able to better defend ourselves, but also protect the environment and find sustainable energy resources. Unveiling how the planet works to understand the present and plan the future”, added President Doglioni.

"The visit of Minister Anna Maria Bernini is an encouragement to continue to carry out our research and surveillance duties in the best possible way; the Institute is projected towards an increasingly frontier scientific planning in the study of the structure and dynamics of the Earth, of the prevention and mitigation of natural risks, at the service of the community and of culture". concludes the General Manager Jair Lorenco.
