It was inaugurated on the afternoon of Wednesday 11 December, at the Geology Section of the School of Science and Technology, the new headquarters of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) at the University of Camerino.

In fact, the Unicam School of Science and Technology has been collaborating for some time with INGV, particularly in the sector of Earthquake Geology and Volcanology with joint participation in research projects and scientific publications of international diffusion. Furthermore, Unicam and INGV already have an agreement in place for the financing of PhD scholarships in "Science and Technology: physical and chemical processess in Earth systems", with INGV staff who are part of the International PhD Academic Board Unicam School of Advanced Study. The two entities are also partners in the “REDI – Reducing Risks of Natural Disasters” research consortium, led by Unicam and which also includes the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) and the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN).

After the greetings of the Rector Claudio Pettinari, the Mayor of Camerino Sandro Sborgia, the President of the Marche Region Luca Ceriscioli and the INGV President Carlo Doglioni, speeches were given by Emanuele Tondi, professor of the Geology Section and Director of the INGV branch of Unicam , David Vitali, Director of the Unicam School of Science and Technology, David Piccinini, Director of the Civil Protection Service of the Marche Region.

It followed the lectio of the prof. Carlo Doglioni on the subject "Earthquakes: WORTH Studying".

Great satisfaction was expressed both by the Rector of Unicam prof. Claudio Pettinari who from the INGV President prof. Carlo Doglioni, who strongly supported the strengthening and institutionalization of the collaboration already in place between the two entities, as well as by the President of the Region Luca Ceriscioli who, through the Regional Civil Protection Department with Councilor Sciapichetti and Manager Piccinini, will also support the activities of the headquarters financially.

“I am extremely proud – underlined the Rector Pettinari – to be able to officially open the doors of this new structure which will host the activities of the researchers of our two Institutions. I thank the prof. Doglioni for having worked to make this possible and prof. Tondi and the Unicam geologists for the work done. The one with INGV represents a very important partnership for Unicam that can contribute to the construction of a true international space for research”.

"For INGV - explains the President Carlo Doglioni - the collaboration with universities that share the same interests in the geosciences is fundamental both for research and for the training of future researchers. The city and the University of Camerino have been deeply battered from the seismic sequence that began on 24 August 2016. Also for this reason, INGV wants to be close and collaborate with this University which has a long tradition of research in the field of the geology of the Apennines and its earthquakes. together with the one already operational in Ancona, it will strengthen the presence of INGV in the Marche Region, an area with very high seismic hazard and which requires studies and a monitoring and surveillance network up to the new knowledge. the GSSI, the University of Camerino and the INGV have also set up the REDI Consortium, aimed at studying natural risks”.

“A great opportunity for Geology and all the Sciences of the University of Camerino – says prof. Emanuele Tondi, Unicam teacher, director of the new INGV headquarters and responsible for the implementation of the research and teaching support programs approved and financed by the two institutions. The collaboration between the two bodies will be aimed at both the didactic offer and the research activity, on specific topics of interest also in our area".

The INGV Headquarters, which also provides for the deployment of the research body's personnel to Unicam, will carry out research and teaching support activities through the sharing of laboratories and instruments. The INGV headquarters will also have an annual budget to finance doctoral scholarships, research grants and additional graduate technicians, or expenses related to the scientific collaborations of the two institutions.
