The next will take place Wednesday 21 August 2024, at 18 pm at the Council Hall of the Municipality of Terranova di Pollino (PZ), the seminar entitled “But should we be afraid of earthquakes? From experiences to the Culture of Seismic Prevention”.
The event, curated by Teresa Tufaro, research fellow at the L'Aquila branch ofNational Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), will have the aim of illustrating the fundamental contribution of scientific research in understanding earthquakes and in the development of effective methods of seismic risk mitigation.
The Earth is a dynamic and constantly evolving system, composed internally of rocks that are not homogeneous in density, characteristics of the materials, pressure and temperature to which they are subjected. This high internal inhomogeneity causes the development of forces in the more superficial layers, which tend to rebalance the system by pushing the rock masses against each other and deforming them.
Earthquakes are an expression and consequence of this continuous evolution, which occurs over hundreds of thousands and, in some cases, millions of years. The earthquake manifests itself as a rapid and violent shaking of the ground and occurs unexpectedly, without warning. Being prepared is, therefore, the best way to mitigate the possible consequences of an earthquake.
