The PCTO training project (Paths for Transversal Skills and Orientation), managed by
12 highly motivated young people participated in the project, working in groups under the guidance of INGV staff.
During the internship, various topics were addressed to help students understand the role of information technology within a research institute and specific applications in the field of Earth sciences were presented. In particular, the importance of cybersecurity for a computer network and the role of computer systems in transmitting and storing seismic data was highlighted.
The work carried out during the internship concerned:
-
IT security, through the creation of a prototype network infrastructure and related services for users and the use of appropriate tools to protect it from cyber attacks.
-
the use of a protocol (SNMP - Simple Network Management Protocol) to monitor the operation of a remote router connected to a seismic station.
-
the creation of Python applications for basic analysis of seismological data, the development of automated procedures for the download and processing of seismic signals and the comparison between different earthquake catalogs through the production of representative graphs
The internship concluded with the preparation by the students of a presentation and/or activity report as a summary of the work and the delivery in digital format of both the report and the calculation procedures developed. Furthermore, a round table discussion was organized involving tutors and students to discuss what has been done, what has been learned again and what can be improved for the future.
All study material will be part of the students' school file and will be the subject of discussion in the future state exam, of which the PCTO is an integral part.
