Sunday 16 June, on the occasion of the European Days of Archeology organized in our country since Ministry of Culture (MiC) and from Italian Environment Fund (FAI),National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) will take part in the conference “The Nunziatella site in Mascali: new discoveries and future prospects”.
During the event, organized by the Ionian-Etna district headquarters ofArcheoclub of Italy, the results of the excavation campaign conducted in the village of Nunziata di Mascali (CT)At the 'archaeological area of “Nunziatella”.
The excavations, carried out within the framework of an agreement between the Superintendence for Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Catania, Municipality of Mascali andArcheoclub of Italy, involved theINGV Etna Observatory (INGV-OE) who provided the Carbon 14 dating of bone fragments from two burials located in the area adjacent to the Church of Nunziatella and other bone fragments of animals recovered within the excavation. Furthermore, researchers from the Section Rome2 of the Institute have created some high-tech ground penetrating radar (GPR) exploration which provided high resolution images of the buried structures, preparatory to the creation of new archaeological excavations.
The excavation conducted so far has already yielded numerous datable fragments of clay materials, tiles and pottery between the 6th and 9th centuries, which testify to the uninterrupted attendance of the area of the monumental complex of Nunziatella, rich in spring water and, therefore, suitable forhuman settlement since ancient times.
Before the conference, scheduled for 19 pm, it will be possible to participate in guided tours of the archaeological site.
