Today, November 23rd, the anniversary of the earthquake that shook Irpinia and Lucania from the depths of 1980, is the opportunity to relaunch attention on the printed edition of the Special Issue "The 23rd November 1980 Irpinia-Lucania, Southern Italy Earthquake: Insights and Reviews 40 Years Later", published by MDPI.

The Irpinia-Lucania earthquake of 23 November 1980 was one of the most serious seismic events ever to occur in Italy. The main shock, of magnitude 6.9, hit an area of approximately 17.000 km², causing the death of over 3.000 people, the injury of over 10.000 and the destruction of over 75.000 buildings.

The volume, edited by researchers Sabina Porfido of the Institute of Food Sciences of the National Research Council (CNR - ISA), Giuliana Alessio, Germana Gaudiosi and Rosa Nappi of the Vesuvian Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV - OV) and Alessandro Maria Michetti of the University of Insubria, contains a collection of 14 multidisciplinary scientific contributions by researchers with geological, geophysical, seismological and historical-humanistic expertise.

There are various aspects linked to the earthquake that the Special Volume analyses: from its genesis to its evolution, from the destructive effects to the reconstruction strategies, up to the resilience of the populations involved and the socio-economic development of the internal areas of the southern Apennines.

"This volume, far from being exhaustive, however has the ambition of being a point of reference for new generations of researchers who will be able to take advantage of a 360° scientific vision of the earthquake, with the widest and most diversified bibliography on the subject", say the authors.

The book includes a precious historical preface edited by the Irpinian writer and journalist Generoso Picone, direct witness of the earthquake of 23 November 1980, followed by the contributions of the researchers: G. Lombardi, FT Gizzi, MR Potenza, A. Ascione, S. Nardò, S. Mazzoli, F. Matano, S. Di Nocera, S. Critelli, S. Criniti, P. Galli, G. Festa, GM Adinolfi, A. Caruso, S. Colombelli, G. De Landro, L.
