The initiative is part of the activities that the Institute implements in the context of the Third Mission, i.e. for the dissemination of geosciences and the involvement of young students in STEM subjects.
According to Patrizia Landi, INGV-PI researcher and creator of the initiative "the rock samples in the collection are representative of the types of eruptions, the chemical composition of the erupted magmas, and the granulometric classification of the products. We have accompanied the collection with cards that describe its main characteristics and, at the same time, provide indications for teachers to carry out simple laboratory measurements to be carried out with students to understand the eruptive dynamics".
The presentation of the collection was accompanied by two hours of training dedicated to teachers who, at the end of the meeting, received the kit with rock samples and explanatory sheets for their school.
The collaboration between the Natural History Museum and the Pisa Section of the INGV has been consolidated for years. In fact, inside the Museum, INGV collaborated in the creation of the teaching and exhibition hall "
The Director of the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa, Prof. Elena Bonaccorsi, and the Director of the Pisa Section of INGV, Dr. Tomaso Esposti Ongaro, highlighted the importance of these events in which they are particularly alive the interaction and exchange of skills between the world of research and the world of school. The necessity that STEM subjects are seen as fascinating study paths constitutes a primary mission for all scientists in building a society that is increasingly aware of the rules of nature.
