Saturday 25 March at 10:00, at the Città della Scienza in Naples, there will be the presentation of the volume "Casamicciola a laboratory for defense against earthquakes - Spies, Clues, Reflections, Correlations" by Giuseppe Luongo (Professor Emeritus of Physics of Volcanism of the University of Naples Federico II), Elena Cubellis (Geophysical Researcher of the Vesuvius Observatory of the INGV) and Ilia Delizia (formerly Associate Professor of History of Architecture at the University of Naples Federico II), published by Bibliopolis .
The volume deals with the problem of the source of earthquakes on the island of Ischia, which is not part of a regionally developing tectonic structure but is limited to the superficial crustal layer of the island.
The authors studied the earthquake that occurred on August 21, 2017 in Casamicciola, in particular its mechanism with the sliding of Mount Epomeo along a fault that plunges to the south and emerges on the surface to the north, where it produced the collapse of the town. To verify the persistence of the seismic source, they deepened the analyzes of historical seismicity and, in particular, the effects of the earthquakes of 1796 and 1828 through archival and documentary sources. The seismic events are located in the hilly area of Casamicciola, repeatedly hit, and characterized by anharmonic propagation of the waves generated by a very limited seismogenic volume, on the northern edge of Mount Epomeo.
The authors, due to the structural elements that emerged, propose the relocation of the inhabited center of Casamicciola Alta and allocate the area to a Natural Science Park of Waters and Memory with the creation of an International Research Center on the genesis and mechanisms of surface earthquakes capable of producing intense destructive effects.
They discuss it with the authors
- Emma Buondonno (Department of Architecture of the University of Naples Federico II)
- Mauro A. Di Vito (Director of the Vesuvius Observatory, Naples section of INGV)
- Armando Mauro (President of the Forma Consortium)
