Another great success for the summer season of the Information Centers of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) present on the islands of Vulcano and Stromboli. The two INGV structures provide logistical support for volcanological research and monitoring activities and, at the same time, offer citizens and the numerous tourists visiting during the summer correct scientific information on the volcanic risk of the Aeolian archipelago.

The INGV Information Centers of Stromboli and Vulcano have two Visitor Rooms, rooms specially designed to provide geo-volcanological information on excursionist destinations through information panels, showcases and a selection of dedicated volumes. Over the course of the last year, these "traditional" tools have been joined by an enhancement of the multimedia information systems: particularly appreciated by visitors are, in fact, the computer system for displaying data in real time on the geochemical and geophysical monitoring activity, the webcam and video links with the Operations Rooms in Catania, Naples and Rome.

Another important novelty of this year was also the demonstration of public interest aimed at universities that INGV has launched in recent months. The objective of the selection was to recruit students from the Science Departments of Italian universities to participate, together with the Institute's experts, in the summer dissemination activities aimed at illustrating the volcanism of the area and the risks associated with it to visitors and residents.

The two INGV Centers in the Aeolian Islands, which will remain open until 19 October, have so far welcomed around 2.000 visitors, with an increase of +3,5% compared to the same period of 2018, confirming the constant growth of interest in the research and dissemination activities of the Institute, both by the communities residing in the archipelago, and by the large number of Italian and foreign tourists who travel to the Islands during the summer to get to know the two volcanoes “up close”.
