2025 edition

This year, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology will again participate in the New Space Economy Expo-Forum 2025, the annual event dedicated to the dialogue between research, industry, and institutions on the future of the space sector and its implications for society.
The event represents a unique opportunity to showcase to the public how INGV uses advanced space and Earth observation technologies to improve understanding of geophysical phenomena, contribute to the reduction of natural hazards, and develop new services and applications for the community.
The 2025 edition focuses in particular on the integration of scientific research, technological innovation, and operational applications, with a specific focus on the role of satellite data, artificial intelligence, and new models of the Space Economy.
Expo-Forum
Throughout the event, the INGV will be present with a stand dedicated to scientific outreach and activities for schools, the public, and enthusiasts. The public will be able to discover the institution's contribution to space research through an itinerary that combines immersive exhibits, thematic workshops, instrumental demonstrations, and educational games created by researchers.
Activities featured this year include:
- stratospheric technologies such as HERMES and the Sun Tracker, used in balloon campaigns;
- laboratories dedicated to hyperspectral spectrometry, thermography and remote sensing techniques;
- Interactive proposals on forest fires, volcanic clouds, rising sea levels, plastic in the sea and other phenomena monitored thanks to satellites;
- the Planeterrella, the polar aurora simulator;
- the virtual reality journey Virtual Journey in the Solar System;
- educational games such as Libera(la)mente, Spice Space and Space Gals, designed to engage students through interactive and multimedia learning.
Alongside the exhibits and workshops, a series of 20-minute lectures will be offered daily starting at 10:30 a.m., led by researchers and technologists from the Institute. The sessions will address topics such as earthquakes and volcanoes from space, space weather, forest fires, sea level changes, and techniques for detecting plastic in the oceans.
All activities, along with the informational and dissemination materials developed for the occasion, will also be available online through INGV's dedicated channels.
Scientific Conference
In addition to the Expo-Forum activities, INGV participates in the NSE 2025 Scientific Conference, contributing its expertise and experience gained in major national and international projects. The Institute will participate in two key thematic discussions for the development of the sector:
“The Role of Research for Space Economy and Security”
Wednesday, December 10 – 15:20 PM
A discussion dedicated to the strategic role of research in the competitiveness and safety of space activities, with insights into space logistics, data services, space traffic management, and technological innovation.
“Earth Observation: Emerging Trends and Evolutions”
Friday 12nd December – 11pm
A roundtable dedicated to new trends in Earth observation: artificial intelligence, small satellite constellations, transforming raw data into operational products, and public-private collaboration models.
In both events, INGV will offer a solid and forward-looking scientific perspective, emphasizing the role of space observation in understanding and protecting the planet.

2024 edition

With experiments, games, immersive experiences and seminars, the INGV welcomes the general public for an exciting three-day event dedicated to Space and the potential that space technologies have in our daily lives.
On the occasion of National Space Day (GNS)
National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) participate inExpo-Forum on the New Space Economy (NSE), the event dedicated to science and dissemination scheduled at the Fiera di Roma from the 16 18 2024 December.
This year the GNS, which falls on December 16, celebrates the 60 years since the launch of the first Italian satellite, San Marco 1, which took place in Virginia (USA) from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility launch base.
The International Expo-Forum on NSE, organized by Fiera Roma in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI), is the event that since 2019 has annually brought together scientists, industrialists, stakeholders, students and enthusiasts for a three days dedicated to the challenges and prospects of the new space economy.
INGV will be present at the event again this year to offer visitors immersive experiences, live experiments and thematic seminars, telling how space culture is revolutionizing the study of geophysical phenomena, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and environmental phenomena.
INGV's participation in NSE 2024 is part of the activities organized by the Institute to celebrate its 25th anniversary and will be coordinated once again by the Center for Earth Space Observations (COS-INGV), Whose mission is to coordinate and plan the INGV activities in the space and aerospace sector.
At the INGV stand at the Fiera di Roma visitors will be able to:
→ live a unique experience with the little planet, a simulator capable of reproduce the spectacular polar auroras inside a dark room, to immerse yourself in the mysterious charm of the Earth's magnetic field;
→ discover innovative tools such as HERMES and PEGASO, devices that have flown in the stratosphere collecting scientific data from aerospace;
→ participate in interactive experiments with laboratory tools which show how satellite data is calibrated and analyzed;
→ deepen the importance of the study of volcanic clouds for air traffic and the environment, and observe cutting-edge techniques for monitoring sea levels and seismic and volcanic signals from space.
For the more curious, there will be no shortage educational games and interactive quizzes about space and its wondersThe program also includes seminars held by INGV researchers, such as “Space makes us less vulnerable” e “The Eyes of Radar on Earth”, which will illustrate the crucial role of space technologies in our daily lives.
All the dissemination material produced by INGV for NSE 2024 will be available to the public, in addition to the stand at Fiera di Roma, also on the COS-INGV website and on the INGV institutional portal.

2023 edition

From 5 to 7 December 2023, the European Expo-Forum on the New Space Economy (NSE), the annual event for space and aerospace research, returns to Fiera di Roma, with a special focus on the social impact of these applications (https://www.nseexpoforum.com/).
The INGV, National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, will once again be in the front row, contributing to the rich program of the event organized by the Amaldi Foundation, Fiera Roma, in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI).
The COS-INGV, Earth Space Observations Centre, will guide INGV's participation also in this new 2023 edition, coordinating the organisation's activities in the space and aerospace sector. The INGV stand will offer a unique opportunity for the public to interact with researchers, discovering how spatial culture can be applied to Geosciences to investigate earthquakes, volcanoes and the environment.
Through informative flyers, thematic videos, seminars and technical-scientific demonstrations, INGV researchers will present their research projects and services based on the analysis of spatial data and technological development.
