This year, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology will again participate in the New Space Economy Expo-Forum 2025, the annual event dedicated to the dialogue between research, industry, and institutions on the future of the space sector and its implications for society.

The event represents a unique opportunity to showcase to the public how INGV uses advanced space and Earth observation technologies to improve understanding of geophysical phenomena, contribute to the reduction of natural hazards, and develop new services and applications for the community.
The 2025 edition focuses in particular on the integration of scientific research, technological innovation, and operational applications, with a specific focus on the role of satellite data, artificial intelligence, and new models of the Space Economy.

Expo-Forum

Throughout the event, the INGV will be present with a stand dedicated to scientific outreach and activities for schools, the public, and enthusiasts. The public will be able to discover the institution's contribution to space research through an itinerary that combines immersive exhibits, thematic workshops, instrumental demonstrations, and educational games created by researchers.

Activities featured this year include:

  • stratospheric technologies such as HERMES and the Sun Tracker, used in balloon campaigns;
  • laboratories dedicated to hyperspectral spectrometry, thermography and remote sensing techniques;
  • Interactive proposals on forest fires, volcanic clouds, rising sea levels, plastic in the sea and other phenomena monitored thanks to satellites;
  • the Planeterrella, the polar aurora simulator;
  • the virtual reality journey Virtual Journey in the Solar System;
  • educational games such as Libera(la)mente, Spice Space and Space Gals, designed to engage students through interactive and multimedia learning.

Alongside the exhibits and workshops, a series of 20-minute lectures will be offered daily starting at 10:30 a.m., led by researchers and technologists from the Institute. The sessions will address topics such as earthquakes and volcanoes from space, space weather, forest fires, sea level changes, and techniques for detecting plastic in the oceans.

All activities, along with the informational and dissemination materials developed for the occasion, will also be available online through INGV's dedicated channels.

Scientific Conference

In addition to the Expo-Forum activities, INGV participates in the NSE 2025 Scientific Conference, contributing its expertise and experience gained in major national and international projects. The Institute will participate in two key thematic discussions for the development of the sector:

“The Role of Research for Space Economy and Security”

Wednesday, December 10 – 15:20 PM

A discussion dedicated to the strategic role of research in the competitiveness and safety of space activities, with insights into space logistics, data services, space traffic management, and technological innovation.

“Earth Observation: Emerging Trends and Evolutions”

Friday 12nd December – 11pm

A roundtable dedicated to new trends in Earth observation: artificial intelligence, small satellite constellations, transforming raw data into operational products, and public-private collaboration models.

In both events, INGV will offer a solid and forward-looking scientific perspective, emphasizing the role of space observation in understanding and protecting the planet.
