High Resolution Digital Topography Lab (Head Stefano Pucci):

Created to organize and make usable the instrumentation useful for the acquisition of high-resolution topographic data and above all to provide spaces and means useful for their processing, managing their use through electronic calendars. The laboratory deals with the acquisition of topographic and micro-topographic data with innovative techniques (DGPS-differential GPS-; Lidar-Light Detection and Ranging- both aerial and terrestrial; Aerial photogrammetry, using drones and balloons; Terrestrial photogrammetry) which allow digital reconstructions 3D of the territory, faithful and high resolution. All the tools used for data collection were organized and made usable (differential DGPS-GPS, Total Station, aerostatic balloon, three digital cameras including a "full-frame" Nikon D750 specifically dedicated to image acquisition useful for photogrammetry, 3 portable GPS).
For data processing there are two workstations (see photo below) equipped with high resolution double screens and two DELL workstations equipped with high calculating and graphic rendering capacity, equipped with appropriate licensed software (MOVE, ARCGIS, PHOTOSCAN, LASTOOL, 3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator, etc.).
Both network and local storage spaces (4Tb External Hard Disk) have been set up for data storage.
For visualization we make use of a large screen with 4K resolution, shared on the network by all the workstations in the laboratory.

Created to organize and to make available the instrumentation needed for high-resolution topographic data acquisition and more to furnish appropriate data processing spaces and tools, managing the requests by an electronic calendar. The Lab is in charge for topographic and micro-topographic data acquisition by means of innovative techniques (differential DGPS-GPS; Lidar-Light Detection and Ranging- both aerial and terrestrial; aerial photogrammetry by means of unmanned aircraft and helikite aerostat; terrestrial photogrammetry) allowing accurate and high-resolution 3D digital landscape reconstruction. All the usable instruments for data acquisition have been organized and made available (differential DGPS-GPS; Total Station; helikite aerostat; digital cameras including one Nikon D750 "full-frame" specifically dedicated to images acquisition for photogrammetry; 3 portable GPS).
Two dedicated posts equipped with double screens and DELL workstations (see picture below) provided with powerful cores, graphic boards and appropriate software (MOVE, ARCGIS, PHOTOSCAN, LASTOOL, 3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator, etc.) are available in room 41 at the ground floor. Moreover, data storage is organized both at local (4 Tb external HD) and network scale. A large interconnected 4K-resolution monitor is also available.

It also makes use of new portable technologies (6 Samsung Note Smartphones, equipped with various licensed Android applications) useful for the collection, georeferencing and real-time sharing of geological data (SiE-Emergeo Informative System) also used during seismic emergency phases. The available instrumentation (GIS and web-GIS) also allows the management, distribution and analysis of the acquired territorial data and the derivation of geological thematic cartography at various scales, as an aid to the characterization of the tectonic activity of faults through geological surveys multidisciplinary.

New portable tools (6 Samsung Note Smartphones, equipped with several Android apps) useful for geologic data collection, georeferencing and in real-time sharing (SiE-Emergeo Informative System) are available and were used in case of seismic emergency too.
All the instrumentations (GIS and web-GIS) allow data management, sharing and analysis as well as the derivation of geologic thematic maps at different scales, in order to better characterize the tectonic behavior of faults by means of multidisciplinary geological approaches.

The database LiDAR MATTM (Ministry of the Environment and Protection of the Territory and the Sea), available at the Geology and Geotechnology Laboratory, after an agreement signed between the Institute and the MATTM, includes the raw data of the entire national territory, acquired for the Plan Extraordinary Remote Sensing (Law no. 179/2002 (art. 27)), aimed at verifying and monitoring areas with a high risk of landslide. The database includes more than 50 strips (laz format), covering coastal areas and the main rivers, up to two thirds of the national territory. In addition, the Geology and Geotechnology Laboratory has the necessary software for data processing and display. Head of CA Brunori

Here is an example:

LiDAR MATTM database, available at the Geology and Geotechnologies Laboratory, after an agreement between INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Volcanologia) and MATTM (Ministry of Environment and Protection of Land and Sea), includes the whole national LiDAR data acquired by means the Not Ordinary Plan of Remote Sensing (Law no. 179/2002 (art. 27) - Extraordinary Remote Sensing Plan) aimed at verifying and monitoring of areas with high landslide risk (for more information see: http://www.pcn.minambiente.it/mattm/en/not-ordinary-plan-of-remote-sensing/). The database includes more than 50 thousands files (laz format) covering coastal and main river streams areas, up to around two-thirds of the national territory. Moreover, the Geology and Geotechnologies Laboratory has the software for data processing and visualization. Head of CA Brunori

Laboratory of Stratigraphy and Sample Preparation (Head Alessandra Smedile):
Stratigraphic and Sample Preparation Lab (Head Alessandra Smedile):

All the material necessary for the preparation of samples for analysis (paleontological and dating) is now positioned and functioning in the LAB 5 container.
These are two sets of ASTM sieves, several beakers (2000ml and 500ml capacity), an ultrasonic bath (cold for cleaning the sieves) and a vibrating table (used to dissolve aggregated sediments). In this way it is possible to carry out all the operations necessary for the preparation of the samples in a single environment. A cockpit cooler (capacity 470 liters) is also available, for storing and maintaining corings and samples at a constant temperature and humidity. At the same time, the LUMIREADER instrument (Resp. Stefania Pinzi) located on the ground floor of the laboratory building (microscope room) is functional and available.
The instrument carries out granulometric/sedimentological measurements (from 0.2 micron to 2 mm), is based on optical technology with three different wavelengths [black (870 nm), red (630 nm) and blue (470 nm)] and is connected to a PC on which the software (Sepview6) is installed for displaying and processing the data. The relative preparation of the samples is carried out in the geochemical laboratory and uses two series of sieves (diam. 100 mm and 200 mm), beakers of different capacities as well as a dedicated oven kept constantly at a temperature of 60 °C.

All the material required for samples preparation of paleontological (Foraminifera and Ostracoda) and dating analysis is located in the container LAB 5. The laboratory is supplied with two series of ASTM sieves, beakers (2000 ml and 500 ml), an ultrasonic bath and a shaking table needed to disaggregate incoherent sediments. In the same laboratory an industrial refrigerator (capacity 470 l) for storing and keeping at constant temperature and humidity cores and samples is available.
Moreover, the optical grain-sizer LUMiReader (Resp. Stefania Pinzi) is located on the ground floor of the laboratory building (microscope room). LUMiReader is able to measure grain size from 200 nm to 2 mm using three different multi-wavelengths [black (870 nm), red (630 nm) and blue (470 nm)] and employs the STEP-Technology, which allows to obtain space - and time-resolved extinction profiles over the entire sample length. Sample preparation for grain size analysis is carried out in the geochemical laboratory thought two sets of sieves (100 mm and 200 mm meshes sieves), beakers of different volume and a dedicated oven maintained constantly at 60 °C.

All the analyzes carried out in this laboratory were preparatory for paleoseismological studies (liquefaction, tsunami deposits, etc.) but also useful for the characterization of the soils for seismic microzonation and as an aid to the study of volcanic ash.

All the analyzes carried out in this laboratory contributed to paleoseismological research (liquefaction, tsunami deposits, etc.) and supported both the soil characterization useful for seismic micro-zonation studies as well as for volcanic ash characterization.
