Geological survey at La Fossa di Vulcano

Over the past few weeks, volcanologists from INGV and the University of Bologna have conducted new geological and cartographic surveys on the active cone of La Fossa di Vulcano, in order to create a more detailed map of the products emitted by the most recent volcanic apparatus of the island and to better assess its danger.
The photograph shows the northern sector of the La Fossa crater. In the foreground, the top part of the Colata di Pietre Cotte, erupted in 1739, affected by hydrothermal alteration and gas emission. In the background the islands of Alicudi, on the left, and Filicudi, on the right.

THE EDITORIAL

editorial1

President's editorial

Four years after the earthquake of 30 October 2016 which devastated over 500 km2 in the heart of Italy, the breath of the Earth is once again being felt between Greece and Turkey, uniting the two nations in devastation, which have often been at odds for centuries. Earthquakes tear apart communities for years to come, and the economic and housing devastation of the affected areas adds up to the tragic loss of life. For this reason, INGV is giving its contribution to the Mission Structure for the Reconstruction of Central Italy in order to recognize the active faults capable of breaking the earth's surface, to delimit the areas where it is advisable not to rebuild, and to allow the rapid opening construction sites in those areas not subject to this risk. In this commitment, the institute coordinates activities with other research centers and universities.

The importance of "educating for the future": the interview with Cristina Pozzi, Co-Founder of Impactscool

Contributing to a better world and positively influencing society starting from training that allows us to look to the future and to change with critical awareness and conscience. This is the goal of Cristina Pozzi, popularizer and social entrepreneur, CEO and Co-Founder of Impactscool, the organization founded at the end of 2016 to spread greater knowledge on the impacts of emerging technologies on society through free training activities in schools, universities and in companies. To find out more and understand why it is so important to create "images of the future" we had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Pozzi who, on this occasion, told us something about herself.

INTERVIEW A

Claudio Chiarabba

He wanders (rarely) discreetly through the corridors of the Roman headquarters. You see him always talking to the same people, his circle. But who is Claudio Chiarabba? Before interviewing him, I asked myself several times. Research manager and former Director of the Earthquakes Structure. An important curriculum, yes amalgama to the "character" that transpires. Is it really like that or was it just a blunder? Reading the interview you will find this answer. I can only anticipate that the portrait that emerges is that of a (former?) Trouble-shooter struck in Prof. Scarpa's path, but also of a serious and esteemed professional who loves his job and his passions (reading and music on all). Joe Strummer, leader of the Clash, his favorite band, said “thinking is why you wake up in the morning” and I can assure you that Claudio thinks... thinks a lot.

LAB EXPERIENCES

The Laboratory of Geo-Archaeomatics and Experimental Geophysics

In the Rome office of INGV there is an incredibly versatile laboratory, which directs its activities and the results of its work towards all the sectors of interest of the institution, from seismology to volcanology, passing through environmental monitoring and heritage conservation archaeological and national construction. It is the Laboratory of Geo-Archaeomatics and Experimental Geophysics, a forge of innovative ideas and fertile ground for the development and implementation of techniques and tools that are always new and in step with the times. We interviewed Fawzi Doumaz, INGV researcher and coordinator of the Lab, to discover the innumerable applications of the work carried out in his Laboratory and let us guide us through drones, submarines and augmented reality.

THE EARTH TELLS

The earthquake of 7 September 1920 in Garfagnana and Lunigiana: the expert's story

This year marks the centenary of the Garfagnana and Lunigiana earthquake, the seismic event which from the historical catalog appears to be the strongest known to date for the northern Apennines. It is important and necessary to remember this in order to maintain high attention on the issue of seismic prevention understood both as structural prevention (interventions on buildings to make them safer from the impact of earthquakes) and as risk education for populations living in seismic areas. To find out about the events of 7 September 1920 and the days that preceded it, we interviewed Filippo Bernardini, a geologist at the INGV headquarters in Bologna.

Between privacy and personal data. The Data Protection Officer of INGV

In a completely interconnected world, where personal data travels as much and sometimes more than goods and people, the management of this enormous amount of information assumes strategic importance for any organization. This is also the case at INGV, where the research and monitoring activities inherent in the institution's mission inevitably intertwine with variously consolidated practices concerning, precisely, the collection, management and processing of personal data of researchers and employees in type. To find out more, we interviewed Lucio Badiali, the Institute's Data Protection Officer, who guided us in discovering the numerous nuances surrounding the role and duties of this fundamental figure in any company organization chart.
