Dear readers, it has been a really difficult year: Italy has had to face, like many other nations, a terrible war against an invisible and insidious enemy. Many of our fellow citizens have left us, in silence.
With a rough mathematical calculation, one might think that the destructive "power" of a pandemic is far greater than that of an earthquake and that, therefore, the latter are a far lesser problem. But, unfortunately, this is not the case for the many who in a natural event have seen their loved ones and their lives turned upside down and who, still years later, tens of thousands still live in "temporary" homes, suffering, moreover, day the demographic and economic fraying of their communities day after day.

"What's going on?”…”Where's Lauro?”
In the long list of "characters" present in the Rome headquarters of INGV, he, our "Morgan", ladies and gentlemen Lauro Chiaraluce could not be missing! I really adore Lauro, I like his personality that travels to the limit between self-idolatry and extreme humility. We could stay here and talk about how good he is and how much he really is a spearhead of the institution. But Life as a researcher, you know, is a real gossip column that exposes, without filters, our dear research artisans. But returning to our Lauro, as already mentioned, you will find a very interesting portrait of a man with strong sensitivity and attention to others. A dreamer who has never given up on his ideas, on his ideal of the “world” and who would like a return, in some ways, to his origins… to contact with nature, with the earth and that simplicity that is too often forgotten by now.
LAB EXPERIENCES
The Ion Chromatography Laboratory of Palermo
The Ionic Chromatography Laboratory of the Palermo Section of INGV began its activity towards the end of the 80s. The Lab analyzes samples of underground, thermal or marine waters, but also of fumarolic fluids emitted by volcanoes, to support the geochemical surveillance activities of volcanic areas and seismically active areas, as well as numerous research projects. Furthermore, analyzes are carried out for environmental investigations, for the study of geothermal fields and for hydrogeological studies. To get a very simple idea, among the many analytical skills of the Laboratory there is also that of carrying out the chemical-physical analyzes that we read on the labels of bottles of mineral water. We interviewed Sergio Bellomo, a researcher at INGV and head of the Lab who, together with Vincenzo Prano, works within it, to better explain the dynamics at the basis of their activity.

The earthquake of November 16, 1894 and the Miracle of the Madonna del Carmine
Sometimes seismic forgetting is slowed down thanks to shared memory. An example is the procession of the Madonna del Carmine, a commemorative cult held every year in Calabria in Palmi (RC) in memory of the earthquake of November 16, 1894. To find out what happened that day and understand why it is so important not to forget, we interviewed Concetta Ours, INGV researcher, who answered our curiosities.

SISMIKO, the Coordination of INGV's Mobile Seismic Networks in an emergency
A cohesive team and in the field throughout the national territory. SISMIKO is the Emergency Operations Group of INGV which deals with the coordination of Emergency Mobile Seismic Networks in emergencies. Its activity takes place directly in the heart of the areas hit by strong earthquakes to improve the monitoring of the territory and perfect the collection of data on seismic events. We interviewed Milena Moretti, one of the "founding fathers" of SISMIKO and today her Coordinator, to find out the details of her work and learn more about the activities in which the Operational Group is involved.
