The vital atmosphere that surrounds us

Learth's atmosphere it is a very thin gaseous layer that surrounds the Earth. Quantifying its thickness is not easy. But if the Earth were the size of a basketball, the atmosphere would be a thin film of plastic wrapped around it. The atmosphere remains localized around the Earth and does not disperse into space because it is attracted to it force of gravity terrestrial, the same that makes us keep our feet on the ground.

THE EDITORIAL

editorial1

President's editorial

While the pandemic is not over yet, Italy, Europe and the whole world are reliving a nightmare that we hoped forgot, that of a third world war which, from a technical-historical point of view, seems to have already begun. It leaves you incredulous as history, the evolution of science and culture have not yet taught how much peace and civil coexistence are always the best solution, a conquest of humanity. One of the many serious repercussions that the world is experiencing, in addition to the humanitarian tragedy, is the energy crisis: this must make us reflect on how Italy and Europe need a common energy policy and strategy.

The climate emergency seen from the Poles. Interview with Professor Carlo Barbante, Director of the Institute of Polar Sciences of the CNR

The consequences of climate change for the state of the Poles continue to cause great concern. Seen from there, what does the situation look like? We asked Professor Carlo Barbante, full professor of analytical chemistry at the Ca' Foscari University of Venice and director of the Institute of Polar Sciences of the National Research Council. Engaged at the forefront of an unprecedented work for paleoclimatology studies, Professor Barbante is a guest of our virtual living room this month.

A RESEARCHER'S LIFE

Qualification: Researcher
Location: Roma 1
Field of activity: Geochemistry of fluids

INTERVIEW A

Luke Pizzino

If there is a researcher in Rome with whom it is practically impossible to argue, it is him. Smile and joke (h24/365 days a year) unlined faster than John Wayne with that "S" as slippery as it is amazing, which he persists in straightening out…but which we like so much. He doesn't sleep at night when he has to prepare the seismic bulletin (now he's going like a sword, better than Bernacca) and he's a rather anxious subject but God bless him: full of life. He has a passion for trains and meteorology. He feels the weight of the responsibility of loved ones and although he has that angelic and clean little face… as a boy he did some mischief. I can't tell you anything, ladies and gentlemen, today we dig deep into Luca Pizzino.

LAB EXPERIENCES

The Sedimentology and Optical Microscopy Laboratory of the INGV Observatory of Etna

The Sedimentology and Optical Microscopy Laboratory of the INGV Etna Observatory aims to analyze the eruptive products of the main active volcanoes present in Sicily, namely Etna and Stromboli. We asked the manager Daniele Andronico to tell us about the activities they carry out within this historic Lab.

THE EARTH TELLS

From Geoethics a precious help to better address the crucial issues of our time: the Journal of Geoethics and Social Geosciences is born

An international space for discussion on geoethics and social geosciences, open to free access and non-profit, open to contributions from those working in the geosciences sector, but also from the human and social sciences, in a multidisciplinary perspective. We are talking about the "Journal of Geoethics and Social Geosciences" of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. To find out more, we interviewed Silvia Peppoloni, INGV researcher and director of the magazine, who explained to us the importance of geoethics, an emerging field of geosciences of which she has been defined as the founder.

The Rome1 Section of INGV in the story of its Director, Salvatore Barba

From under our feet to above our heads. The research carried out by the Rome1 Section of the INGV covers a wide range of subjects, from the study of the interior of the Earth to research on atmospheric gases. A section oriented towards multidisciplinarity, which opens the doors of its numerous scientific laboratories to all research groups who want to deepen an intuition or develop an idea, with a view to constant progress that is only real if it is the result of collaboration and work synergistic. We interviewed the Director of the Roma1 Section of INGV, Salvatore Barba, to learn more about the activities that take place within his Section and retrace the years leading his team with him.
