Propose articles on the ethical, social and cultural implications of geosciences, promoting study and research aimed at accompanying security and sustainable development policies for human communities, providing transdisciplinary food for thought and defining proposals and actions aimed at tackling global changes anthropogenic: these are just some of the aims of the magazine "Journal of Geoethics and Social Geosciences" of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), just launched.
THE EDITORIAL
With the spirit that science has no boundaries and must be an instrument of brotherhood among peoples, in the context of the very serious international crisis of recent weeks, INGV has accepted the invitation of the Minister of University and Research, Maria Cristina Messa, regarding the actions in support of the Ukrainian scientific community. Therefore, it was decided to open the doors of the Institute to Ukrainian geoscience researchers, offering them scientific stays for the time necessary to meet the needs imposed by the ongoing war. The solidarity of the scientific community is strong and has also materialized with the open letter of Russian scientists, in clear contrast to the government line: a courageous and not obvious choice, aware of the risks also for one's own safety that it underlies. The hope is obviously that the war will end as soon as possible and that, in addition to ending this unprecedented violence, the threads of human and scientific collaborations between all the actors of this historical moment will be picked up.

The X-Ray Diffractometry Lab of the Vesuvian Observatory
Is it possible to use the diagnostic tools of modern medicine to know the 'state of health' of our planet? The answer is given by the researchers of the X-Ray Diffractometry Laboratory of the Vesuvius Observatory of the INGV. In fact, here scientists use X-rays to "screen" the rocks that make up our planet and obtain from their analysis all the mineralogical information they need: from the functioning of the magmatic systems to the reconstruction of the eruptive dynamics, passing through the study of hydrothermal and geothermal alteration processes, but not only. A versatile Lab that we discovered through the words of its manager, researcher Angela Mormone.

THE EARTH TELLS
February 23, 1887, the three earthquakes that shook Liguria
1887 was a particularly difficult year for the inhabitants of Western Liguria. Three strong earthquakes hit the area, causing casualties and the collapse of several buildings. About 20.000 were displaced and some cities were damaged so badly that they were abandoned. To find out more, we interviewed Stefano Solarino, an INGV researcher, who told us what happened in those days and the characteristics of the seismic events that struck the area.

MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP
A Section with firm roots in the Bologna area and the heart turned to Europe and the world. The capital of Emilia hosts one of the most heterogeneous Sections of INGV, in which the close collaboration between scientists of different backgrounds well reflects the strong bond existing between the three nuclei around which the Institute revolves: Environment, Earthquakes and Volcanoes. The Bologna Section is preparing to experience a season of great changes and important innovations, which will lead it to weave an even closer relationship with the university world and to take part in the activities of one of the most advanced Computing Centers on the continent. We talked about it with the Director Antonio Costa, who opened the doors of his Section to tell us better.
