Science Talk >> VOLCANOES IN SCIENCE AND SOCIETY
Among natural features, volcanoes are the most spectacular. Fascinating and dangerous, they have always been traversed and populated, even the most remote, even the most destructive. Understanding eruptive dynamics, therefore, is not only a matter of scientific research, but also a collective necessity. While scientists are studying volcanoes with increasingly sophisticated tools and technologies, the communities that inhabit or pass through them "speak" to them, draw inspiration from them, observe them, and learn how to defend themselves. This talk will highlight some of the connections that naturally develop between those who study volcanoes and those who "live" them. Volcanoes and Territory (e.g., Guatemala; Chile; Campi Flegrei), Volcanoes and Art (e.g., contemporary artist Caterina Sbrana), Volcanoes and MondoScuola (e.g., how to disseminate science quantitatively). Seminar led by Claudia D'Oriano, researcher at the INGV Pisa Section.

Scientific talk >> THE GREEN ARMY: HOW PLANTS DEFEND CULTURAL TREASURES FROM AIR POLLUTION
Cultural heritage is strongly undermined by atmospheric particulate matter (fine dust), which creates dark layers, abrasion and deterioration of surfaces, resulting in artistic loss. The use of chemical and magnetic biomonitoring techniques for the preventive conservation of cultural heritage has recently been introduced, using leaves and lichens as bioaccumulators of atmospheric particulates, whose magnetic properties derive from ferrimagnetic particles similar to magnetite, often associated with trace metals. , of which motor vehicles, and particularly braking systems, represent the main source. Furthermore, the methodology was enriched by the monitoring of rubber microparticles, mostly deriving from tire abrasion. Our results show that green areas provide important ecosystem services, limiting the spread and harmful impact of pollution on cultural heritage located in urban contexts, and that lichens are excellent bioindicators for assessing the extent of pollution.

Guided tour -> BOLOGNA AT THE TIME OF THE EARTHQUAKE
One of the lesser-known characteristics of the city of Bologna is that it is subject to earthquakes, like the whole national territory, however. From this point of view, the city is not the most dangerous place in the country or even in the region, but various factors mean that the level of earthquake risk in Bologna is quite important. This is why it is interesting to retrace the history and seismic stories of the city through some traces that recall the most important episodes and help us remember that we will have to deal with the earthquake.

Seminar -> HOW POLLUTED IS OUR PLANET?
It is known that plastics and especially microplastics are present in all ecosystems on our planet. The main sources of plastic release into the sea are coastal and maritime activities and inefficient waste management. But how can we study the problem and what can be the solutions to stem it? This seminar organized in collaboration with the Digital Astronomy Group (GAD) will try to answer these and other questions.

Conference -> A LIVING PLANET: COMPARING SATELLITE IMAGES REVEAL WHAT HAPPENS DURING EARTHQUAKE
Many earthquakes on land produce a surface deformation that is imperceptible to humans but "visible" and measurable using differential radar interferometry (DInSAR), a technique which consists in comparing two images of the same area, obtained before and immediately after the phenomenon it intends to investigate, and in the systematic detection and mapping of differences. We will see how, thanks to the data obtained, it is possible on the one hand to explore the general and detailed characteristics of the seismic source, and on the other to understand how the repetition of strong earthquakes shapes the landscape over geological time. We will examine the L'Aquila earthquake, one of the most studied with the use of radar interferometry, in a journey to discover the transformations of our territory.

Conference -> THE VOLCANIC RISK IN ITALY: WHY IT IS THE HIGHEST IN THE WORLD
Italy is one of the first countries in the world for the number of inhabitants exposed to volcanic risk, also because the areas close to active volcanoes are all densely populated. Since it is impossible to prevent an eruption from occurring, to ensure the safety of these areas it becomes essential to be able to quantitatively estimate the level of risk that characterizes them. To do this, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the various quantities that come into play in this estimate: we will analyze together the danger level of the single volcano, the exposure of the population and buildings, and finally the vulnerability of the latter, of the infrastructures and of the lifelines of potentially affected by a rash.

Conference -> SPACE WEATHER AND SATELLITE: WHEN DANGER AND OPPORTUNITY MEET
Space weather phenomena are among the most energetic events that occur in our solar system and have effects on the Earth, representing one of the natural risks that jeopardize the technologies on which our society increasingly relies. Among them, those based on satellite positioning provided by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are among the most critical because their possible malfunction impacts on crucial sectors such as navigation (air, sea and land) and precision agriculture . Together we will analyze how these meteorological phenomena threaten the GNSS system, but at the same time provide essential data for the development of models and algorithms useful for improving knowledge of the circumterrestrial space.

Exhibition -> HOW DO VOLCANOES WORK?
We begin by observing the eruption (not too closely!!), then the erupted material is collected and its characteristics are analyzed in the laboratory. With the use of various instruments, such as the microscope, information is obtained on the composition and internal characteristics of the magma. Finally, these results are put together and, with the help of the computer, a virtual eruption is created. Ours is a team effort to understand how and why magma was formed and how and how long ago it rose to the surface giving rise to spectacular eruptions.

Conference -> EARTHQUAKE AND SEAWALK IN LIGURIA BETWEEN SCIENCE, RESEARCH AND FOLKLORE
In a region where weather emergencies are frequent, earthquakes and tsunamis are sometimes underestimated phenomena. In fact, to find destructive earthquakes in Liguria you have to go back to 1887 for the Imperia area and 1920 for La Spezia. However, the recent seismic activity in the Genoa area has opened up a new field of investigation and changed, at least partially, the point of view on the earthquake phenomenon in Liguria. This short presentation aims to answer questions such as whether there are relationships between earthquakes that occur in Italy and those in the region, whether a strong earthquake can occur in the future, whether the Ligurian territory is subject to tsunamis and so on. In a journey through cities abandoned after the earthquake, the visits of the priest Mercalli who perfected the homonymous staircase in Liguria and stories with a popular flavor, we take stock of the seismic hazard and what the future scenario could be.

2020
European Researchers' Night in Italy
Researchers' Night is an initiative promoted by the European Commission since 2005 which every year involves thousands of researchers and research institutions in all European countries.
The aim is to create opportunities for researchers and citizens to meet to spread scientific culture and knowledge of the research professions in an informal and stimulating context.
Events include live science experiments and demonstrations, exhibitions and guided tours, conferences and seminars, shows and concerts.
Italy immediately joined the European initiative with a multiplicity of projects that traditionally make it one of the European countries with the largest number of events scattered throughout the territory.
For 2020, the project involves 7 projects in Italy for a total of over 80 cities. INGV researchers are involved in five of these projects.
We look forward to seeing you on November 27!
