Earth - The Planet in 5 Senses
2 April 2025 18:00 - August 31, 2025 22:00
TechnoTown, inside Villa Torlonia, Via Lazzaro Spallanzani 1/A.
The INGV, National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, is celebrating its 25th anniversary, an important moment for the contribution that this institution has given to the development of scientific research in the field of Geosciences, and for the increasingly important role it has assumed in the lives of citizens: just think of the collaboration with the Department of Civil Protection in relation to seismic surveillance of the national territory.
For this occasion, the INGV has organised an exhibition designed for both the general public and schools, a journey which, through a multisensory involvement, will allow the direct recognition of important natural phenomena. There will also be a look at the history of the Authority and future challenges.
The sensory path will provide a live representation of often invisible phenomena: we will therefore 'listen' to seismic waves, or 'see' the Earth's magnetic field. It is a vision guided by the 5 senses because these allow man to interact, in various ways, with the environment that surrounds him, the researcher to observe a phenomenon and ask himself "why", the citizen to become curious, enriching his interests and increasing his awareness. It is a path that puts people in the foreground and how they perceive geosciences, perhaps triggering memories, emotions, desire to know. The imagined path will be inclusive and accessible to people of all ages and abilities, thanks to open collaborations with associations and schools that work for the promotion and accessibility of cultural heritage.
The common thread will therefore be our senses - smell, taste, touch, hearing and sight - which will guide us towards the exploration of the Earth system, its internal structure, geological and environmental evolution, problems related to natural risks, the processes underlying climate change, space technologies, the sustainable use of natural resources, fundamental for our species.
In addition to being able to visit the reproduction of our seismic surveillance and tsunami warning room, people will be able to swing on a vibrating table that realistically reproduces the vibrations of a seismic event.
The exhibition will be hosted in the premises of TechnoTown, the hub of creative science, inside Villa Torlonia.
The inauguration is scheduled for April 2, 2025.
The exhibition will be open to visitors from the April 3 to the 31 2025 August, from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 to 19:00 (last entry at 18:00) and with an entrance fee of € 1,00 per visitor. Reservations required only for groups and schools.
