Wave hazard data
In 2018, CAT-INGV carried out a pilot research on tsunami risk perception in order to collect empirical data on tsunami understanding and perception; to assess how citizens perceive tsunami risk; to improve the dissemination of information and alert messages; to improve scientific communication and dissemination strategies and activities.
The pilot research was carried out on a sample of 1021 interviewees, representative of the universe of residents in the coastal municipalities of two Italian regions: Puglia and Calabria, historically more exposed to this type of phenomena. A research on the entire Italian coastal population (over 16.7 million people), would have required a much larger sample.
A very interesting fact is that the interviewees attribute a different meaning to the words "tsunami" and "seaquake", which actually indicate the same type of phenomenon.
