Genova

INGV at Festival della Scienza 2020

Everything is ready for the new edition of the Genoa Festival della Scienza, the event that every year brings together researchers, enthusiasts, schools and families in one of the major international science dissemination events. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) will participate in the 2020 edition with a laboratory for children and adults dedicated to tides.
This year, in fact, the Genoa Science Festival has articulated its program around the theme of waves. The waves can be of many types: electromagnetic ones, seismic ones, passing from the waves of the sea up to the tides.
And it is precisely to the tides that the INGV dedicates the workshop for children and adults.
Starting from Tuesday afternoon and until Sunday 1st November it will be possible to deepen this theme by participating in MAREOPOLI, an exciting team game. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the laboratory will allow to explain the mechanisms of tidal formation and related phenomena from a scientific point of view.
From the historical point of view, then, it retraces the theories of the scholars who, starting from the Greek period with Aristotle until the end of the eighteenth century, passing through Galileo, Kepler, Newton and Laplace, tried to provide an explanation to these cycles of the sea.
Cross-cutting issues will also be discussed, but connected to the complex phenomenon of the tides, such as renewable energy, biodiversity and the protection of the planet
