Newsletter n.6
INGV newsletter | no.6 | June | 2020 | fourteenth year
- Written by Staff
The June cover is dedicated to gaming, with family or friends, at home or on vacation. With "Acchiappa la plaque", the new game by INGV Volcanoes, we discover the relationships between earthquakes, volcanoes and the movement of our Earth. Because having fun, knowledge is a game! http://www.ingv.it/it/divulgazione/educational
The return to the extraordinary "normality" seems to be approaching, but prudence still obliges us to maintain some of the measures aimed at safeguarding the health of all INGV personnel. Even if hopefully there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel, nothing will be the same, at least for some time. We will remain aware of having gone through a dramatic period which, however, has united and strengthened us. Despite this, INGV certainly does not stand still, on the contrary it runs: departmental projects are finally starting up aimed at the study of seismic and volcanic precursors, at the reconstruction and dynamics of the crust and mantle under Italy, at climatic variations.
L'GUEST OF HONOR
Studying the mechanisms underlying rare genetic diseases for which a therapy has not yet been found and transforming research into something usable for patients: these are some of the objectives of Tigem - Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine, the institute created by the Fondazione Telethon in 1994 and today located in Pozzuoli, Naples. To find out about the activities of this Centre, capable of attracting brainpower to an Italy from which they are fleeing, we interviewed the Director of Tigem, Andrea Ballabio. Scientist of international renown and first in Italy to receive the Louis-Jeantet Prize for medicine, Professor Ballabio told us about the path that led him to the direction of this important Institute, the flagship of worldwide research.

A RESEARCHER'S LIFE
INTERVIEW A
We could have met Mauro at the Ace Cafè in London arriving aboard two splendid English motorcycles wearing two leather jackets full of pins. Or maybe on Oxford Street driving an elegant car and sipping tea like two English gentlemen. On both occasions there would be no difference. Why? Because Mauro knows how to be kind and generous and therefore ideal for Oxford Street but also direct and not very "friendly" for the Ace Cafè. The portrait that emerges from this interview is of an outspoken boy, the classic "good guy" who shouldn't be angered. He loves sport, company and in the face of difficulties he always gathers a smile and looks forward with optimism. Oscar Wilde said “The first duty of a gentleman is to dream”…and Mauro has many dreams ahead of him to realize.

LAB EXPERIENCES
The laboratory of chemical and physical analyzes of the vulcanites of Catania
A versatile and innovative Lab that preserves the eruptive history of Sicilian volcanoes and which, over the years, has been able to reorganize and innovate itself to keep up with the times and make the Catania Section of INGV a cutting-edge reality in analysis and in petroleum monitoring. We talked about it with Lucia Miraglia, head of the chemical and physical analysis laboratory of vulcanites, who told us more about the phases and objectives of her work between instruments and slides.

MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP
The Information Centers of Vulcano and Stromboli
Always logistic support structures for monitoring and research activities, as well as fundamental scientific information points for visitors, the two INGV Information Centers in Stromboli and Vulcano have been for over twenty years "beacons" for the inhabitants of the two Aeolian islands and for the tourists who, every year, land in large numbers on the beaches of the archipelago. We talked about it with Caterina Piccione, responsible for the scientific dissemination activity of the Centers, to learn more about their history, their numerous activities and the innovations in the pipeline for the summer season now upon us.
